Where'd all them ideas get to?!
Monday, September 13, 2010 at 10:54 One of my least favorite contemporary clichés is "Hollywood is out of ideas!"
As someone who trades in ideas—new ideas, mind you—this is fucking offensive. What you mean to say when you're chiding the Hollywood system is "Hollywood is afraid of new ideas because they're more difficult to fund, market, and sell due to the lack of a previously built audience like those that exist for such existing premises as sequels, true stories, video game franchises, comic book properties, television shows, board games, and, well, really anything else that has or could have a narrative element innate to its existence."
Of course, that's quite a mouthful.
TL;DR, Hollywood isn't out of new ideas. They've just forgotten what to do with them. They need to be shown. No matter how new the idea, if it's good enough—if it's good at all—it'll succeed. They've forgotten that. And thus, they've caused us to forget it.
It won't always be so.
(I hope.)
